Welcome to the Green Masterplan
The Green Masterplan is a vision of a more sustainable future for Ely. It takes in transport, housing, leisure and other issues essential to the city’s future. The Green Masterplan has been developed by East Cambridgeshire Green Party as our contribution to the debate over the city’s future. Let us know what you think, and help get our proposals adopted by the council.

What’s different about a Green Masterplan?
The pressures we face require long-term and potentially radical solutions. East Cambridgeshire Green Party supports the idea of a masterplan for Ely as the best way of doing this. But rather than a bright vision for the city’s future, the District Council’s plan is heading for a directionless mess of sprawling, could-be-anywhere housing, reliance on the car for all journeys, a continuing over-use of resources, and a belief that climate change won’t happen here.

Why do we need a masterplan?
We
must plan for our future. Ely is a wonderful place, but the pressures on it are huge: Locally, land and property prices are high, pricing many out of the housing market. Retail, leisure, transport and other public service facilities have failed to keep pace with recent expansions in the city’s population. Nationally and regionally, Ely is under pressure to provide space for further development. It forms part of the Cambridge sub-region, identified by Government as a major point of growth in population and employment. Ely is also under pressure to develop in a way that puts less pressure on our environment, and encourages sustainable patterns of living. How we respond to these pressures will govern the kind of place that Ely becomes. That Ely should put forward a vision for its future is right.

East Cambridgeshire Green Party does not believe that we have all the answers. But the masterplan must be an ambitious, forward-thinking document. It must enhance the historic beauty of the city whilst responding to demands for growth, and making us less intensive on the environment. Set out in the Green Masterplan are the key elements and ideas that will make us a beacon in responding to the pressures of the 21st century. Everyone who cares about Ely’s future should be interested in our proposals. Let us know what you think. More importantly, join with us in making a green vision for the future the central theme in the District Council’s plans for the future of Ely.
